270 days after the earthquake of April 16, insurance companies compensated a total of USD 374 million – at the end of January 12, 2017 – indicated this Wednesday, January 25, 2017, the Ecuadorian Federation of Insurance Companies ( Fedeseg). The insurance companies, in these nine months, received 38,423 claims; of which 86% of the reported cases have already been fully compensated. According to Fedeseg, provinces such as Azuay, Bolívar, Cañar, Carchi, Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Esmeraldas, Manabí, Guayas, El Oro, Imbabura, Loja, Los Ríos, Pichincha, Santa Elena, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, and Tungurahua presented claims –of partial or total damage to houses, vehicles for example- derived from the earthquake. Last April 16, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck the Ecuadorian coast; and it mainly affected Manabí and the south of Esmeraldas. Damages caused by the earthquake are estimated to be USD 559.9 million. Of this total figure, 67% was compensated, said Fedeseg.
